PRIMARY SCHOOLS .'CAB-NIVAL AT TE ARO Children from most of the primary fcchools in the vicinity of Wellington were present at the Te Aro Baths on Saturday afternoon to participate in the first annual carnival of the Wellington Primary Schools' Amateur Swimming Association. Judging by the enthusiasm of the children, the carnival was a great success, notwith-standing-the unpleasant weather. The new association, which is the first of its kind to be affiliated with the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, ytzs only formed last month, and is intended to foster swimming and life-saving in schools. Team-work is encouraged in all the races, and the only two trophies at present awarded aro those given for competition between the schools. The school points] trophy was won by the Clyde Quay School, j and the Tom Shields Memorial Trophy by the Koseneath School. Mr. P. Coira, on behalf of the New Zea- j land Amateur Swimming Association, precented the Shields Trophy as a memorial to the late Mr. Tom Shields, who had done so much for school swimming during \ iis life. . On behalf of the Schools' Association, Mr. J. Finlayson thanked the Wellington j swimmers who had given the trophy, and said that they greatly appreciated the spirit which prompted the swimmers to commemorate in that way the work j which the late Mr. Shields had done. Mrs. Shields then presented the trophy to the captain of the Koseneath team. Sirs., Shields said that she hoped the trophy would foster swimming, and that she would like to give a substantial recognition to the Schools' Association. The
