Thai' Australians opened their cricket fcniitcu-with Wanganui in line, style today, and the end of the day's play left tho situation rather hopeless for the local side. Batting 'first, Wunganni wore all out for 83, Griminctt proving the downfall of eight men for the smnll total of 30 rims. The Australians nt the wickets gave a sparkling display, nnd'at the drawing of stumps had lost three wickets for 230 runs. ' Ponsford and Sclftieider opened the vistors' innings. Kuns were slow, only .3 being scored off six overs sent down in the first quarter of an hour. .After being at the crease half an hour Schneider opened his account with a smartly run single, bringing 20 up. Shortly afterwards ho drove Kirwin for 4 nKd then brought 30 up with,a uuick to the boundary. Tho Wauganui fielding helped considerably to keep down the total. The batsmen were now giving a delightful exhibition of smart running and backing up between tho wickets. Schneider brought his total to 40 with a single oil' Hutchison. Tho third ball of : the over saw Schneider bring 90 up with.a hit to square leg boundary, and the same batsman late cutting Holland for 4, brought up the century. Williams replaced Holland. Pousford's total reached 40 when he drove Williaihs to the, boundary, Play stopped for the afternoon tea adjournment, the totul standing at 100 without lons. Holland secured first wicket, Schneider being dismissed leg before with 04 to his credit. . Richardson"ijoined Pousford, and runs came a little faster, 140 being soon reached. Both batsmen guvo chances, but, although the homg team was fielding well,they could not rise to the occasion. Richardson's stay at tho wicket was sliort. Reaching tho i unlucky number, he whr boaten by a ball from Holland, and was replaced by Grimmctt. Grimmett opened by running out 4. ' Williams's over concluded witli an addition of 13 rims to tho visitors' score, and 100 came up. Spectacular placing by tho batsmon brought the score on at" a rare pace. With the total at 210, Ponsford was just short of liig century.' A 4 off Williams saw him reach his goal, but with the succeeding ball was clean bowled by William's.
