HOTEL DESTROYED

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NAPIER, This Day. A fire which is believed to have originated in the kitchen'chimney, practically demolished the Empire Hotel, a three-storied brick building of 40 rooms in Shakespeare road yesterday afternoon, only the front premises on the ground floor being left. The blaze had a good hold when the brigade arrived, and the firemen'b efforts were hindered by a poor water supply until a pump was brought into action. The flames were conquered after a stern battle, lasting for two hours. Nine guests lost all their belongings. The building was owned by the Gleeson Estate, Auckland, and was covered for £4000 in the Commercial Union Office. The contents and fittings were insured for approximately £2000 in the South British and National Offices. Tho licensee, Mr. A. M. Herbert, had only been in occupation, for a few months.
