FOREIGN MISSIONS

METHODIST ACTIVITIES (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The annual meeting of the Foreign Mission Board of the Methodist Church of New Zealand was held in the Pitt Street Church under the chairmanship of the Rev. Dr. H. Ranston, president of the conference. The financial statement, presented by the Rev. G. T. Marshall, showed that the income from 1927 from all sources totalled £18,088. Of this amount the New Zealand Church contributed £13,569 and the Native Church in the Solomon Islands group £4519. The special items included were £200 from the Young Men's Bible-class Union toward the salary of the medical missionary, and £86 from the Dominion Sunday Schools for a surf boat for use on the Bougainville. A report was presented through the Government Commissioner in the Solomons from Dr. B. C. Sayers, the recently appointed medical missionary, revealing a great need for extensive work to combat tho diseases prevalent among the natives. An encouraging endorsement of the board's policy is shown in the Commonwealth Government's action in granting an annual subsidy of £200, with a promise of a liberal supply of drugs to the estimated value of £200, and transport and other facilities. It was reported that later in tho year Dr. Clifford James, who has completed training in the School of Tropical Medicine, London, and who has gained a Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, will proceed to tho field. Steps were also taken toward the establishment of a hospital to be known as the "Helena Goldie Hospital" I
