RHEUMATISM
PLAGUE OF INDUSTRY TREATMENT IN BRITAIN (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, 26th Jan. As the first step in a scheme for providing similar institutions in all large industrial centres, the British Red Cross Society, with the support of the Health Ministry, is establishing in London a new clinic for treating rheumatism. Nearly one-sixth of the industrial invalidity in Britain is caused by rheumatic diseases, which cost the country nearly two millions sterling annually in sick benefit payments, apart from the wastage involved in lost working time. The general idea is to bring treatment within the reach of workers, thus enabling them to remain employed during treatment. Clinics for rheumatism opened in London by the Red Cross during the war are still doing valuable work, treating twenty thousand patients annually. Trade unions and friendly societies are showing practical interest in the scheme.
