I.C. AND A. ACT
RECESS CONFERENCE PRELIMINARY ARRANGEMENTS Undoubtedly tho biggest political subject of the present Parliamentaryrecess will be the proposed conference discussions to formulate recotamendations for improvements to the arbitration system. ' When the matter was under discussion in the House of Bepresentatives on the iyial day of last session it was agreed that a conference should be called at which all interested parties should be represented, and that the preliminary arrangements for the constitution of the conference and tho preparation of the agenda paper should be made by a Committee of Directors on which the various parties in tho House were represented. The preliminary conference of members has now been called for Wednesday next, Ist February, at 10 a.m. The negotiations have been precipitated chiefly through the insistence of the farmer representatives in the House that the interests of the primary producers are prejudicially affected by the operation of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, and as a compromise upon the highly contentious Bill before the House last session, proposing that the farmers should be exempted from the Act. The Prime Minister, in proposing the conference, pointed out that it had extraordinary possibilities, possessing all the elements calculated to t>ring the employer and worker into closer touch than they have ever been before in this country.
