PICNIC
Employees o£ the Wellington Gas Company held their annual picnic at Maidstone Park, Upper Hutt, yesterday, thevo being an attendance of nearly 900, amongst whom were the general manager (Mr. M. J. Kennedy) and Mrs. Kennedy, the engineer (Mr. J. Hungerford) and Mis. Hungerford, and principals of the various departments. The weather was glorious, and all, both young and old, thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The different committees worked hard, and great credit is due to them for the success of the day's outing, which was enlivened by contributions from the Port Nicholson Band. Childdren were especially catered for. The results of the sports were as follow: — 100 yds. Handicap (employees only)— First heat: A. Cleveley 1, V. Steele 2, J. Smith 3. Second heat: J. Meade 1, J. Rigley 2, P. Findlay 3. Final: V. Steele 1, A. Cleveley 2. Single Women's Race (50yds, open)—M. Proeser 1, D." Martin 2. Men's Race (75yds; employees 50 years and over) —A. Hook 1, H. Woolcott 2. Married Women's Race (50yds; employees' wives only):—Mrs. Mercer 1, Mrs. Lochore 2. Thread-the-Needle Race (50yds; employees only):—B. Annear 1, B. Holmes 2. 100 yds Emr-and-Spoon Race (employees only)— First heat: D. Watson 1, H. Wiffin 2. Second heat: J. Culling 1, J. Ramsden 2, E. Annear 3. Final: H. Wiffin 1, D. Watson 2. 75yds Elopement Race (employees only)—W. Holmes and Doris Martin 1, B. Price and Mrs. Cresswell 2. 150 yds Gas. Company Handicap (employees only)—J. Smith 1, V. Steele 2. 100 yds Visitors' Handicap—B. Holmes 1, P. Fox 2. Tug-of-war Shield—Great interest was evinced in this item, which caused intense excitement. There were five teams .competing, captained by H. Woolcott, J. Caiman, J. Ramsden, Pettersen, and J. Leaver. After several hard pulls the shield was eventually won by Ramsden s team, who now hold it for 12 months. This team also won the shield last year. 50yds Young Ladies' Race (employees only)— Marie Prosser 1, Edna Hawthorne 2 Ladies' Guessing Competition—Mrs. Lobb and Mrs. Holman, equal. The annual picnic of the T. and G. Mutual Life Society was held recently at Day s Bay There was a large attendance ot members of the staff and their friends. The children and adults were well catered for in the way of races and refreshments, all the children carrying home presents. The sports results included the following:— Staff ladies (under 20): Miss Riddick 1, Miss Vivian 2. Staff ladies (over 20): Miss H. Roberts 1, Miss M. Chesterman 2 Staff men's handicap (under 40), Mr. G Colley 1, Mr. S. Moran 2. Staff men's handicap (over 40), Mr. Page 1, Mr. Brookes 2. Staff ladies' open handicap: Miss Tobin 1, Miss H. Roberts 2. Indoor staff relay, Mr. T. Burt, Misses H. Roberts, Spackman, E. Clark, 1. Divisional relay Messrs. E. W. Robb'ins, V. Marquis, Coleman, and Lynch, 1. Three-legged race: Miss H. Roberts and Mr. S. Moran 1, Miss W. Chesterman and Mr. A. Thawley 2. Quoits competition: Mrs. Talbot 1, Mrs. Williamson 2. Elopement race: Mr. li. W Robbins and Miss Whitfield 1.
