KIRK-WINDEYER CUP TOURNAMENT
THOSE WHO QUALIFIED The qualifying rounds of the Kirk-Wiu-dcyer Tournament championship were completed in. good time yesterday afternoon. The wind freshened a little for the second round, and some of the scorers did not do so well as in the morning. The only outstanding cards in the afternoon were the 75's of Horton and Dobson. Horton's read 554334544—37, 543435455—38; Dobson's was 445343535—30, 654434355—39. Dobson, the only Australian who made a good showing, was, however, not playing in the championship, and.will not remain for the rest of the tournament. This is regrettable, because, though rated as merely an emergency for the Kirk-Win-deyer Cup team, none of the other visitors on the same mark (plus 1) are playing up to Dobson's form. It may well be that they have not yet become accustomed to the changed conditions, and probably they found the wind a handicap. Certainly it was not the course which was at fault, for they were delighted with it. "I have visited Hamilton, Rotorua, and Middlemore," said Dr. Sydney Jones, the captain of the team and president of the New Soiith Wales Golf Association, when asked his impressions of the course and its condition," and I have seen nothing like this there. The greens committee is to be congratulated on the condition of the greens at Miramar, in the middle of a drought. They are true and firm, and if anyone cannot hole the ball it's his own fault. The best golfing hole on the course is- the seventh. Since I was here last the 17th and 18th have been shortened. It is a great improvement, at the 17th especially. The green can now be reached in two shots, and the value of the rising green, surrounded by well-placed bunkers for a sporting second shot, was formerly lost. The new 15th is a well-designed hole, and a great improvement on ' the old "crater." QUALIFYING AGGREGATES. The following are the qualifying aggregates:—
Amongst those who did not qualify were D. Pharazyn (Napier) 167, J. Harold (Wanganui) 168, M. Ducan (Wellington) 168, lan MacEwan (Wellington) 169, J. A. Mangan (Invercargill) 170, J. H. Hutcheson (England) 170, and Dr. Sydney Jones 171. SECOND STROKE HANDICAP. The Second Stroke Handicap was won yesterday afternoon by P. F. MacDonald (Leura, Australia) with a card of 81-7—74. MacDonald is a slight, young member of the visiting party, with a graceful, easy style and a very pleasing swing, who seems to get his results with' a minimum of effort.
