STREET ACCIDENTS
LONDON'S UNENVIABLE BECOBD. Statistics, issued recently, regarding the occurence of accidents in the streets of London during the three months July, August, and September, show an increase in the rate of fatalities compared with the previous two quarters of the year, says the "Daily Telegraph." During the quarter under review reports were made to tho Metropolitan Police concerning 28,806 accidents, involving injury to persons or property, in which 269 persons were killed or fatally injured, a total equivalent to approximately three deaths a day. Tor the previous two quarters combined the number of fatalities was 475. During the first nine months of the year London street accidents have been responsible for 744 deaths. Analysis of the fatalities during the third quarter shows that of the 269 victims there wero 175 pedestrians, 24
drivers or occupants of cars, 38 pedal cyclists, and 32 motor cyclists. In the case of pedestrians the most frequent causes of accidents were: — Cases. Passing between, behind, or in front of stationary vehicles .. 28 Crossing without due care C 3 Hesitation or faltering ..'. 28 In collisions fifteen motorists lost their lives and fourteen pedal cyclists carrying extra passengers wero involved in fatal collisions.
