METAL AND MOTORS

Mr. B. H. Homer, Eotorua County Engineer, on his return from a holiday tour, stated that where tar or bitumen sealing is not used the highways are getting tremendously cut up by the volume of motor traffic and the dry weather conditions prevailing. This is specially so on the macadam road laid down with heavy metal. In many places the air blast has left big metal as islands in the road bed. He considers that nothing but sealed roads can stand up to the existing motor speeds, and that this is a problem that will have to be tackled if highways are to last. The imposition and expenditure of the fourpenny petrol tax will not carry the Highways Board work through under the present destructive traffic conditions. The South Tarankai Automobile Association is having a five-mile stretch of road measured and marked for the purpose of providing motorists with the means of checking the accuracy of their speedometers. "Beware of the old ones," was Mr. G. Bernard Shaw's laconic reply when asked to contribute a few words of advice to new motorists.
