UNEMPLOYMENT
INSURANCE SCHEMES A week ago there were on the register of the Government employment bureau 340 men seeking employment. This fact was mentioned to the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) by n, deputation headed by Mr. W. Bromley last week, and the Mayor was asked to realise the necessity of putting into operation at once the works authorised when the loan proposals were carried. Unemployment was obviously foreshadowed, said Mr. Bromley, and lie asked Mr. Troup to get the Unemployment Committee together and have the unemployment insurance scheme proposed by tho Labour Party examined. Tho Mayor said that all the members of tho committee had not yet returned from their holidays. There would be difficulty in starting the paving works forthwith because tho bitumen which had been ordered had not yet arrived, but a start should be made in about ten days. Ho was unaware of tho dotails of their • unemployment insurance scheme, but would be pleasod to investigate it. Mr. Troup said that he had been working on an unemployment insurance scheme himself, but would liketo know the full details of their scheme before iv any way committing himself. LABOUR WOMEN'S REQUEST. At the conference of Labour women, held in the Trades Hall on 11th January and the following two days consideration was given to the question of unemployment. It was resolved and carried to write to the Prime Minister urging upon him to take steps immediately to deal with the unemployment problem, which it was stated was already becoming urgent, and promised to be very serious before next winter has passed. It was also decided to urge the establishment of an unemployment insurance scheme, such as is in operation in Queensland at ths present time, and on the lines introduced into Parliament by the Labour Party at the close of tho last session.
