DESTROYED BY FIRE
A four-roomed house in Buckley road, Island Bay, near Haughton Bay, was totally destroyed by firo shortly after 10 o'clock on Saturday night. The owner and occupier was Mr. Gordon Claude Hare. No water was available, but by the use of the household supply and hand pumps and buckets, the brigadesmen were able to save the adjoining house which was slightly scorched on one side. Mr. Hare's house was insured in the South British office for £200 and the contents were insured in the same office for £100. Tho house next door is owned and occupied by Frederick John Lloyd and is insured in tho State Fire office for £800. Tho contents are uninsured. Before the arrival of the Fire Brigade, a neighbour, Mr. M'Grath, did much to save Mr. Lloyd's house from destruction, placing wet sacks on the roof and side next to the burning building and directing a garden hose on the places which seemed likely to burst into flame. About a year ago, a fire broke out in. a house on the same site as that saved on -Saturday. The building was destroyed but Mr; Hare's house was saved from destruction. Saturday night's outbreak reversed the position. ■ The Fire Brigado was called at 8.9 this morning to 4, Huteheson road, Newtown, a five-roomed house, occupied by Mrs. Josephine Blackley, and owned by George Bayliss, of Beef street, Island Bay. The roof and a bedroom, with its contents, at the rear of the premises, were damaged by fire and water and cutting away.: The outbreak is thought to have been caused by sparks from a defective copper chimney. Tho contents are not insured, but there is a policy for £285 on the building in the Guardian office. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, This Day. Through sparks from a scrub fire alighting on a schoolhouse at Awarua Plains, the building and contents were completely destroyed in the early hours of Friday morning. The furniture was insured for £350, but there was no insurance on the building. AUCKLAND, This Day. Casey's timbermill at Freeman's Bay, and its machinery, were destroyed by fire early this morning. An adjacent box factory was undamaged. The mill was situated in the vicinity of boat building yards and petrol stores, but fortunately the wind was blowing in tho opposite direction. The insurances on the mill and contents total £3500. WHAKATANE, This Day. A fire completely gutted D. Bergman's jeweller's shop in the Strand at 2 o'clock on Sunday morning. The shop forms part of a theatre building, and the theatre itself was saved through tho prompt action of the brigade and the excellent pressure of the borough water, supply. The building is owned by Caldcr and Macdiannid. Tho insurance is not available.
