Mr. G. W. Wylcs, assistant signal and electrical engineer of the New Zealand Railways, returned from the South today. Mr. E. A. James, general secretary of the New Zealand Political Reform League, returned to Wellington from the South Island yesterday. Dr. J. Henderson, M.A., D.Sc, has been appointed Director of the Geological Survey in succession to the late Mr. P. G. Morgan. A Press Association cablegram from Melbourne to-day announces the death of Mr. Joseph Sternberg, known as "The Father" of the Legislative Council. He was 76 years old. Advice has been received by cable that Mr. B. R. Ward, who won the Jarvis Prize for Architecture in 1926, left London yesterday to proceed to Rangoon, where he will be in charge of the Burma branch of the architectural firm of Messrs. Foster and Corfiats, of London. Sir George Elliot, chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zealand, an 3 Lady Elliot are passengers by the Niagara for Auckland, states a Press Association message from Sydney. The Chief Electrical Engineer of the' Public Works Department (Mr. F. T. Kissell) left last night for Arapuni, where he will make a general inspection of the hydro-electric works. Mr. J. C. Murray, manager for the Vacuum Oil Company Pty., Ltd., in Otago and Southland, has been promoted to the position of general manager for Western Australia. Mr. and Mrs. Murray and family, will leave Wellington by the s.s. Marama on the 20th inst., en route to Perth, where they will in future reside. A large and representative gathering of residents of the Upper Hutt district was present at the Independent Hall, Upper Hutt, on Monday evening, to bid farewell to Constable D. Wallace, who has been transferred to Wanganui East. The Mayor of Upper Hutt (Mr.' P. Robertson) presided and a very pleasant evening was spent, musical items being provided by Messrs. O 'Flaherty, Todd, Smith, Massey, Piri, and Bucknell. The Mayor, on behalf of the residents, presented Constable Wallace with a dinner service, pantry set, and set of dinner and dessert knives, and spoke in eulogistic terms of his work during his term of service in the district and of the general regret of the residents at his departure. CounGillors Greig and Jameson also expressed their regret that Constable Wallace 'a j duties necessitated his transfer from Upper Hutt. Constable Wallace re- j turned thanks.
