NIGHTINGALES

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Many paragraphs have appeared in the Press lately relative to the above. Kindly let me add my humble word. I do not know when or how nightingales were first introduced into New Zealand, but in 1916, while I was living in Esplanade road, Mount Eden, one entertained me during the early morning with his delightful song. To prove this was no imagination I woke my wife and we both listened to the full song. Apparently this individual was perfectly happy in New Zealand, and the fact of his being alive might go a long way to allay any doubts as to their becoming acclimatised or being the victims of any cruelty through transportation.—l am, etc., . WELLINGTON. 9th January.
