FOR BIGGER ONES,
A fascinating and dainty pastime for winter evenings is painting on wood. Plain white wooden boxes, door-plates, candlesticks, umbrella handles, etc., may be obtained at most big stores, and'on these almost any type of colour may be used. There is a choice of water-colour, liquid colours (aniline dyes), and marquetrry stains through which shows the grain of the wood, and oil-colours which cover it. Choose a bold design and trace or copy it in pencil on to the object you wish to colour, then fill in with the brush, using for preference any vivid colours and a little black to throw them into relief. I saw a pair- of quaint candlesticks done in ordinary water-colours, by a child of eleven, and they were very charming in colours of vivid blue, amber, and black. Amber candles completed a very attractive little gift.
