MISS GLEITZE'S SWIM

(United Press Association.—Copyright.) TANGIER, 17th December. Miss Mercedes Gleitze, who started an 'attempt to swim to Gibraltar yesterday morning, but gave up after being 7£ hours in the water, commenced in smooth water and. used the side stroke effectively, but, encountering a "Levanter," was forced to resort to the breast stroke. In the constant struggle with the waves feeding became difficult. Tho trainer's boat was often iv danger of swamping, and tho occupants, except the professional boatmen, became seasick. Tho gale grew worse, and it was considered useless to continue. The swimmer encountered poryoises, but no sharks. Miss Gleitze is confident of succeeding in calm water.
