NIGHT SPORTS

IN WIND AND RAIN

QUEENSLANDERS COMPETE

JENKINS SCORES WELL

Only ;i few Inmdred spectators were at the Basin Reserve on Saturday night for the electric light sports meeting. . They were enthusiasts! The bitterly cold southerly wind and the rain, which fell about fifty minutes after the commencement of the meeting made conditions as unpleasant as they could be. On top of that the already "dead" tracks soon became greasy. The athlete's lot was by no means a happy one. But for the cheerless weather the meeting would have been one of the finest held under electric light in Wellington.. As it was two of the events were abandoned, and the fields in some ot' the other races were small. However, there.were some quite good performances aud not a few exciting finishes. GOOD TALENT. The majority of the events were conducted under championship conditions, that is, they were scratch contests. Among those who competed were Wellington representatives at the recent New Zealand championships, M. Leadbetter, the New Zealand ,100 yards and 220 yards champion, who took part in a 440 yards relay, H. R Newton (Wanganui), and members of the Queensland team who are in Wellington for tlio coming Australian and New Zealand chnnipionships. The talent was excellent, but the weather was all against the competitors. The Quecnslanders, no doubt, felt the cold considerably, and were tmablo to give of their best, although K. Keskinen performed well in the field events, pleasing particularly in the javelin throw and in the hop, step, aud jump. Against the -wind Keskinen recorded a throw of 169 feet with the javelin, and displayed excellent style. C. H. JENKINS'S DOUBLE. A great contest was provided in the 100 yards A grade sprint, which was won by the local champion, C. H. Jenkins. The field included the Queenslanders, L C Parker, N. J. Grehan, H. Day, and W. J. Wall. At fifty yards Parker and Jenkins were together, but over the last part of the distance Jenkins put in a brilliant finish to defeat the Queenslander narrowly. Grehan was third. The time was lOsec., but the wind was helpful. In the furlong Jenkins was again successful, lhe Queenslanders in thiss event failed to secure a place. Jenkins got away well at the start, and was clear of the others going up the straight. He won comfort- ? bl y.™l J- Cunningham and J. T. Fleming filling second and third places respectively. ' The time— 24 was slow but m the straight the wind made the going difficult. In the 440 yards relay test, the Wellington team scored well from the Queensland team; The ' Wellington men held an advantage throughout, and Leadbetter led Tarker to the tape by 10 yards. THE LADY ATHLETES. The lady athletes had the benefit of the strong wind m their etents, and fast times were recorded. In the 100 yards invitation event Miss S. Swinburne and Miss M. Collins dead-heated for first place in 11 psee., time which equals the New Zealand record. Miss Swinburne also obtained second place from scratch iv the 100 yards ladies' handicap. The finish or the 120 yards hurdles event was robbed of a good deal of interest when the New Zealand champion, E. W. Lander struck a hurdle and lost his balance. Up nil tnen he was on level terms with' F S Ramson and the mishap cost him the ttTs'ar mS°n WOU Witk three ycards Under the conditions the New Zealand champmn, C..8.
