PROFICIENCY RESULTS

PRELIMINARY REPORT

At the meeting- of the Wellington Board of Education the senior inspector, _ Mr. -D. A. "Strachan, presented a preliminary report on the number of proficiency "certificates gained- at the recent examinations. Of the 2732 examined in the public schools of the districts, 2102, or 76.9 per cent., obtained proficiency certificates, 152 endorsed competency, and 246 competency. Failures numbered 232, or 8.5 per cent. Last year's percentages were 75.2 proficiency and 9.5 failures. In tho private schools 417 were examined; 343 gained proficiency, 17 endorsed competency, and 28 competency, 29 failing. The chairman and members expressed the opinion that the district was to be congratulated on this solid record of excellent work, especially in view of the unfavourable conditions in regard to weather and epidemics which the district had experienced during the year.
