"CULTURED AND AMBITIOUS"

(United Pres3 Association.—Copyright.) (Received sth November, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, 4th November. The "Daily Chronicle" says: "Much surprise has been expressed at the announcement that Suteliffe continues to play as a professional." The writer adds that it is able to state definitely that Suteliffe sailed for South Africa with the express understanding that if his election as captain was confirmed ho would play as an amateur. The decision of the full committee is at variance with that of the negotiating sub-committee. The present arrangement is unlikely to be more than temporary. "Suteliffo is a clever man, cultured and ambitious," says the "Chronicle," "and he has been remarkably successful in business. That he is prepared to make sacrifices to play as an amateur will probably mean that sooner than expected he will captain Yorkshire, and possibly England, as an unpaid player."
