J. Seobie, who won the Melbourne idouble with Trivalve, also has the added satisfaction for being responsible for the breeding of the colt. When manager o£ the Melton Stud, Seobie mated Trey with Cyklon and Trivalve was the result. Scobie's previous Derby winners were Malster, Sylvanite, Hautvillers, and Wolawa. With Trivalve, Mr. E. E. D. Clarke won his first Melbourne Cup. E. Moon, who won the Cup Steeplechase at Flemington on Tuesday, on Clan Eobert had been to the fore in the Cup Hurdles Race three times previously iv 1912, 1919, and 1926.
The easiest Melbourne Cup victory was that of Artilleryman, who scored by six lengths. Artilleryman spread-eagled his opponents. The three-year-old appeared to win by more than the official verdict of six lengths. The Comedy King colt was defeated in the V.R.C. Derby a few days before the Cup by Richmond Main, and deadheated with the Sydney colt in the A.J.C. Derby. In the Cup, Artillery man completely turned the tables on his rival.
Poseidon is the only horse who has been capable of winning the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups in the one year. Many attempts have been made to win the double, but the task is a big one, and with the penalty incurred for the Caulfield success, many horses are put out of court in the longer race. Four horses have gained a place in the Melbourne Cup after winning the Caulfield Cup. Grace Darling finished second at Flemington after her Caalfield win. Dewey -was third at Flemington, Uncle Sam third, and Shepherd King second. It falls to the lot of few jockeys to win the Melbourne Cup. R. Lewis has the best record in this race. He has piloted four winners and four seconds. Artilleryman, The Victory, Patrobas, and Trivalve -won the Cup for Lewis, and Malster, Alawa, Shepherd King, and Stand By wredited him with seconds. It is thirty yeats since Lewis rode his first winner at
Flemington on Derby Day. That was Battalion, on whom he captured the Melbourne Stakes iv 1897, beating Coil and Key. The following year Battalion again won the Melbourne Stakes with Lewis in the saddle. Lewis also was successful in the Melbourne Stakes on Alawa in 1009, and on Manfred last year. He rode his first winner in the V.R.C. Maiden Plate in ]900, when he scored on The Union Jack. He subsequently captured tho same race on Pliable, Benbow, Barm, Moe and Mint Sauce. He was successful in the Maribyruong Plate on Finland in 1889, and on Trey twenty years later. He won the Hotham Handicap of 1905 on Demas, and scored in that race in later years on Tulkeroo. Lewis has ridden eight winners of the Victoria Derby and he scored in the Cantala Stakes on The Night Patrol. \ Carbine still holds the weight-carrying record in connection with the Melbourne Cup, and, incidentally, the biggest field that ever contested the historic race faced the barrier on that occasion. Carbine defeated 38 opponents, and carried 10.5. George Young intends to retire from the saddle within a few months. He had intended doling so at the end of the Melbourne Cup Meeting, but it is possible that he will go to New Zealand to ride Agnon in the Great Northern Derby at Christmas. After that he will return to Sydney and set up as a trainer. He has been promised patronage from several owners, and his prospects are good.
