TONIC MILK
NERVE STIMULANT.
The effect of milk as a stimulant of growth and mental activity in childhood ha recently been under investigation (says the "Daily Mail"). In America 84 children at a charity school were examined: 42 were given a full ordinary diet, and 42 had a pint of milk substituted for some • other constituent. It was found that those who had milk increased in weight and stature more rapidly than those who had not, even when the latter were given an extra ration of sugar and bread. The results were so striking that the experiment was reversed, to prove that the 42 children on ordinary diet were capable of such extra growth, and this ■•"as found to be the case. It was noted that those who had milk were quicker, and more difficult to manage than the others, suggesting .that the milk had a definitely stimulating effect on the nervous system. These experiments have been repeated and confirmed at an establishment near London, with the additional evidence that the children on milk were generally much healthier, and less subject to illness, and-had smoother skins and a straighter carriage. Butter and watercress added to the diet increased the weight but not the stature. The question whether there is some vital and special clement in milk which stimulates the development of Hie skeleton and also the mental and nervous system of the child is being further investigated. _
