EASTBOURNE SANITATION
A correspondent,: "H.J.5.," writes' at length concerning Eastbourne sanitation service. Some nine months ago, he states, the Department of Health warned the bor^ ough that it must substitute something better for the primitive sanitation system, now in use if a risk of disease were to be avoided. The Health Department had' previously drawn attention to: the. seriousness of the position on at. least two occasions. The correspondent states that he himself owns a section at Eastbourne, but he would not build and reside in tHe borough with his-family under present conditions, and _he believes there are other people holding' the same views. At present, he states proposals are being secretly discussed between the Wellington City Council and representatives of the Eastbourne, Petone, and Hutt Boroughs. "If Mr. Troup is successful in inducing the Wellington City Council to take over the whole of the other Bide of the harbour from the Petone Bridge to the lighthouse and supply water from the Waintii reservoir to be carried along the foreshore and supplied compulsorily to every ratepayer at, say, £2 2s a head, he will have done enough to warrant the. erection of a monument to his memory." The correspondent holds.that it is better for the City- Council to run Eastbourne than to continue taking the present health risks.
