FALCON ISLAND
VISITED BY LABURNUM'

AUCKLAND, This Day. Falcon Island, which has vanished and reappeared several times within, the last fifty years, is now well above the surface and has shown exceptional volcanic activity. When seen by the Laburnum a fortnight ago it was belching forth great columns of steam and lava to the height of 3000 ft, and playing every twenty minutes. ;■ ■ During the Laburnum's visit, 4th" October to 7th October, a careful examination was made and the island was found to be approximately 1730 yds long and 1430 yds broad. The ■ sides sloped up to the edge of the crater, 305ffc above the water. •
• The Laburnum sighted the volcano in' action eaij/ on Tuesday morning, 4th, October, and the phenomenon was visible from Nukualofa and Tonga, nearly* fifty miles away. . ' . ■ .
