LIST OF THE SUCCESSFUL
Mrs. Gill is the fifth woman to swim the English Channel and the third this year, the others being Miss Mercedes Gleitze and Dr. Dorothy Logan, on 7th and 11th October respectively. The only other person to succeed this year was Mr. E. H. Temme, of London, who crossed on sth August last. Previous to the feats of the three women this year the Channel has never been swum later than 17th September—by Norman Derham last year. Criticism from France threw doubts on the possibility of such feats at this time of the year in the northern autumn on account of the coldness of the water, but it is a fact that the water of the sea cools far less quickly than tßat of rivers and lnkes, and is recognised as being almost as warm in October as in September It is also a woll-known fact that women physically are more capable of enduring long immersion in cold water than men. There' is therefore no inherent improbability in the Channel being swum at this season, and particularly by women. Following is the list of the fourteen successful swimmers of the Channel in order of their
times:—■ Hours. Mm. Georges Michel (10th Sept., 1926) ..11 5 Hans Wierkotter (30th Aug., 1926) . 12 40 Dorothy Logan (11th Oct., 1927) . 13 12 Norman Derham (17th Sept., 1026) .. 13 55 E. H.
