Australia l)as given £1000 of tins, and the Eoyal Society £450 Sir ilathew Nathan, in a paper before the Geographical Section, described the present state of knowledge of the Great Barrier Eeef. Later, in the Zoological Section, he explained that since 1922 a committee of Australian scientific men had directed a certain amount of physiographical and geological work on the reef, but that on account of the lack of trained biological investigators, comprehensive biololical inquiry had been impossible. They woro now anxious to got such an inquiry conducted by British-trained investigators with Australian assistance, and, if possible, to found a permanent marine biological station in the SouthWest Pacific. He was supported by Sir Edguworth David, from the geological point of view by Professor Gardiner, of Cambridge, and by several others. It was agreed to.ask the council of the association to appoint a committee to op-operate with the Australian scientists in this matter, and the sections of goography and geology are expected to support tlj£ suggestion.
