PEACETIME ACTIVITIES

The monthly meeting of the Peacetime Division, Wellington branch British Eed Crosa^ Society, was held at Eed Cross headquarters last Friday. There were present: Lady Ehodes, Mesdames C. H. Chapman, S. .Myers, J. Pbw, E. Wright, F. T. Clarke, F. W. Kemp, Miss Tynes,~and SUter Lewis; Mr. C. H. Chapman (chairman), Hon. Dr. W. E. Collins, Messrs. A. Martin, F. Hurley, and M. S. Galloway (secretary). . .

The chairman referred to the work which had been done at Mount Cook School in serving meals during the winter. Letters of appreciation had been received from the Education Board, School Committee, headmaster, and headmistress. The chairman thanked the Ladies' Auxiliary for the way in which they had carried out this duty. . Affiliation wijh the National Council of Women was completed. Mrs. C. H. Chapman and Miss T. Lissington were the society's delegates to that body, the former having been elected to the Child Welfare Committee of the council.

•Mr. H. D.. Giocott,- lion, secretary, Bed Cross, Pahiatua, wrote remitting ;ui amount resulting from a recent appeal. The Pahiatua people also sent in a large amount of useful warm clothing which had been helpful to the society in meeting requests for assistance. '

A letter was received from the Eilbirnie School Committee expressing appreciation of the services given by Sister Lewis. The Director of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind (Auckland) wrote thanking the ladies for disposing of baskets manufactured by the blind at the Winter Show, an undertaking which had resulted in £30 being handed over to^the institute.

The Hutt Valley Dramatic and Operatic Society and the Commercial Travellers' Choir have both agreed to give concerts in aid of the society's funds.

The secretary reported that the matron of OtaM Sanatorium had thanked the society for books and papers sent. She also stated that gramophone records, neiv or second-hand, would be most acceptable.

Letters of thanks are to be sent to Messrs. G. J. Hicks and Co. for the fine collection of new books sent in, and to thr: secretary of the Lyceum Club for a »upply of papers.

The auxiliary, under Mrs. Wright, has continued to meet, requests from various hospitals having been attended to. In addition, 376-garments and 57 pairs of boots and shoes had been distributed during the month among necessitous cases. . The committee wishes to thank those people who have generously donated gifts of clothing, reading matter, etc., during the month. Sister Lewis reported that arrangements were well in hand for the students' dance, which promises to be a most successful function.

Thanks were expressed to Mrs. Fairoairn in promoting a bridge afternoon and handing the proceeds over for Eed Cross purposes.

Mrs. A. J. Meredith intimated that she was arranging a dance on behalf of the Eed Cross Society, and the committee resolved' to co-operate in every way.

The following ladies were unanimously elected to the committee: Mesdames J. C. Eolleston, D. M. Fairbairn, Moore, Hendry, and Miss Bown.

Sister. Lewis (Bed Cross nurse) and Miss Lissington (secretary, Junior Red Cross) both submitted reports for the month, which indicated a healthy development in both branches of work. Miss Lissington mentioned that the Radio Broadcasting Company had asked her to arrange Junior Red Cross concerts during the children's session, and this she had done.

Interesting reports were also received from Mr. L. 0. H. Tripp and Miss Sybil Nathan, two of the society's delegates to the Junior Red Cross Conferonce held in Brussels in July.
