FIRST ENGLISHWOMAN

MISS GLEITZE SUCCEEDS

A FEAT OF ENDURANCE

(United Press Association.—Copyright.) LONDON, Bth October.

A London typist, Miss Mercedes Gleitze, on her eighth attempt succeeded in swimming the Channel, achieving the honour of being the first Englishwoman to do so. She landed on the chalk rocks between South Foreland and St. Margaret's Bay at 6.10 last evening, after being iv the water for 15 hours 15 minutes. It was an astonishing achievement, considering the time of the year, and the cold and fog. Miss Gleitze collapsed on the rocks, saying: "Thank God I am across." Then she was carried into a boat and taken to Folkestone, which was reached at 10 o'clock.
