BAND CARNIVAL
SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION
WINNERS IN THE QUICKSTEP
Perfect weather favoured the Band Carnival which took place during the weekend, and the military quickstep contest attracted a fair crowd on Saturday afternoon to Athletic Park. The twelve competing bands, with 1 their conductors, were:—Boys' Institute (A Iremonger), Wellington Artillery (Captain T. Herd), Ist Wellington Regimental (Lieut. B. J. Shardlow), Petone Municipal (G. Laurancc), Port Nicholson Silver (J. ,7. Drew), Lower Hutt Municipal U\. Kaye), Petone Central (L. Francis), Wellington Tramway (T. Goodall), Mission Silver (It. Baker), Miramav Silver (A. Sutherland), Jupp's Silver (W. J. Jupp), and a composite band. The musical judge of the playing in the quickstep competition was Mr. G. Buckley, the military judges being Colonel B. ,St. J. Beere, Captain M. L. Bruce, and StaH-Sergeant-Major J. Duncan, Mr. E. Palliser acting as supervisor. The Cartwright Silver Cup, awarded to the band obtaining the highest musical and military points, was won. by the Artillery Band, with 243 points. The Begg silvermounted baton, awarded to the Dand obtaining the second highest aggregate points, went to the Wellington Tramways Band, who scored 239% points. The Hull-Brown Metronome was the third prize, the winners, being Jupp's Silver Band, 233 points. The Turner Medal, given to the drummajor of the band scoring most military points, was won by Drum-Major V. E. Wheeler (Artillery Band). In the competition marks were awarded for marching, wheeling, and other military manoeuvres; appearance" on parade and cleanliness of instruments were also taken into account. The marks were awarded as follows:—
The following marches were played, providing a wide enough 'selection to suit all tastes:—"Flag, of Truce/ "The Musk«teor/ "Victoria," "Pathfinder," "The Contemptibles," "Pomp and Pageant," Old Comrades," "Gardes Dv Corps," "JX'ewcastle," "Imperial. Echoes," "For freedom and Honour," and "Franconia." At the finish of the contest the bands in massed formation played the popular march, "Dawn of Freedom," and the National Anthem.
The evening concert in the Town Hall proved to be an unqualified success. The massisd bands played/"New Colonial" and Handel s "Largo in C," whilst a trombone band of over 30 performers provided a distinct novelty by playing "The Trumpeter. Scotch dancing and music by Mr. ■I", lardley, the Dominion's champion piper, was one of the most popular of the evening's items. Mr. Claude Tucker contributed a flute solo and Mr. Billy Hart a specialty act. Vocal solos were contributed by Miss Nora Greene and the Lyall Hay Mixed Choir. The three prize-win-ners of the previous evening's boys' instrumental solo competition also contributed to the programme, at the close of which the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) presented the prizes to the winners of the quickstep and other contests. On Sunday the various bands marched by four different routes to the Basm Reserve. There the massed bands played the march, "The Great Little * rS ?, tlle hymns, "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Eternal Father." Individual bands played other selections of appropriate music, which was much enjoyed by those present, some of whom joined in the singing of the hymns.
