SCIENCE AND THE BIBLE
There was a good attendance at the Concert Chamber last evening when Dr. i.'owit, of .aucKiuna, delivered the nrst of a series o: iectuics under the auspices of the .New Zealand Bible Training institute,'his subject bemg ■•tjcioncc and the iiibie." Air. H. I. Aiouraiu was m tne chair.
l>r. Pettit dealt with the idea, that .modern science had rendered belief in the iiible untenable. Too oilcu the account o£ Genesis wus examined m the light of evolution, which was ' a.v theory and not a fact, and while he was pi-spurcd. to admit that the Bible could not bo reconciled with'scientific theories, onehud to remeuiber that few scientific theories stood for even half a century..- lint when one camo to compare the teaching of the Bible with the facts of science it was found there was no contradiction whatever. The speaker challenged any scholar to produce Mom the realm.of astronomy, biology, geology, or any other branch of science one fact which conflicted -with the statement o£ Scripture. Because the Bible was the Word of God, there could be no possible conilict between it and trus science. True science dealt with facts and revealed God's voice in Nature. If anyone could prove that the facts of Nature contradicted the isible, they would demonstiatc that it was not the Word of God. But that was exactly what all down the ages it had been impossible to do. The Bible was always ahead of every branch of science. It was not designed to be a text-book, he admitted, but in/no case where it touched on matters of science was.it at fault. Ho challenged the scientist' to produce one ; instance of error.
Dr.'Pettit will continue his lectures tonight, when his subject will be, "Has Science Found the Missing Link?"
