MR. "WHEATLEY RESIGNS

Wheatley placed his resignation f rota the House of Commons' in tho hands of the local Labonr'Party; at a ' meeting yesterday, refusing to alter his decision, which is attributed to his unsuccessful libel action at Edinburgh.

*, ~ ' ber of Mr. J. E. Mac Donald's Cabinet in 1924, lost a six-day slander " action in Edinburgh last July against John .Maurice Ecid Miller and Alexander B. Anderson, from whom he claimed £3000 damages apiece, alleging that a letter Miller his Conservative opponent; wrote to Anderson's newspaper, the "Eastern Ar-' gus," contained slander. The case arose through Wheatley's offer to pay «iooo to anybody who proved tht truth of rumours which contended that he iad reduced a Parliamentary majority
