BOWLING

EASTBOURNE OPENS

A WELL-KEPT GREEN

If there are any bowlers who are apt to forget the. approaching bowling season when spring makes its appearance, they are. always reminded by the opening of the Eastbourne Club, which is climatically weeks ahead of the city. Eastbourne is in many ways' the garden of Wellington, sheltered and sunny as it is, and this year the representatives of bowling clnbs in the city who attended the enjpyable opening function on Saturday were struck by not only the excellent condition of the green 'but by the'care expended on tho , grounds by tho greenkceper (Mr. Coop- | er). Tho natural surroundings of the green are ; probably tho prettiest in, Wellington, .and it was evident that 1 .Mr. Cooper had been doing an immense, amount.of work. The green looks bettor than any time in its history, and ho has given great attention to tho garden plots and the smaller lawns 1 while a portion of the hillside behind the paviliqn has been planted with shrubs and flowers, and in the middle of the season will present a most picturesque appearance. The visitors were welcomed by the president (Mr. W. Perry) and Mrs. Perry, who stressed the great future of bowls, and alluded to the future possibilities of touring bowling teams acquiring the importance of other New Zealand sports teams abroad. There would presently be keen competition for inclusion in an All Black bowline team. • s Tho Mayor of Eastbourne (Mr. H. M. Jones) also welcomed the visitors, and wished the club a successful season Mr. Marcus Marks extended the good wishes of the bowling centre. Mrs Perry sent down tho jack ana the first bowl, drawing a good shot. Afternoon tea and music wero provided, and in the evening indoor tournaments were held.
