The Key. W. H. S. Hewett,'rector of Stanniore, is responsible for the idea of holding an open-air Confirmation for-bed-Tidden child patients. It. was a scene of very poignant beauty, in the garden of thsßoyal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, when the Bishop of London performed this ceremony (says a London writer). A temporary altar was created on the*lawn, j under the shade t>f the great, ancient! oak trees, and the beds of the patients wore brought out and placed about it. All the patients who could walk were present at the service, and also the staff: of the hospital. The. girl candidates, wore the usual, white Confirmation veils, and the bishop passed from bed to' bed, laying his hands on their heads, and repeating the ancient formula, "Defend, O Lord, this, Thy servant, With Thy heavenly grace.'? . The sky was dull during the service, but towards the end there was a. glorious burst of sunshine that seemed.a heavenly benediction , npon tho whole Ceremony. The impressiveness and beauty of the scene was unforgettable. There stood the bishop before the'altar, in his full canonical robes of gleaming white and gold, with' his mitra and his pastoral staff, and the chanting choir around him, and then—a sudden burst of light from heaven. Most beautiful of all £ot the children was. the. smile •with which the bishop greeted each little sufferer in turn.' -^ Miss Freda Sternberg, tho well-known ; Australian and English journalist, has just gone to Oontrexeville: for- a ."rest after ; the strenuous London season (writes a London correspondent).
