With the King and Queen and a large proportion of the social world at Cowes for the Royal .Regatta, country clothes seem to be the only topic of interest during the last few days, and the dressmakers refuse to talk of "new" things for the autumn. The sun. happens to be shining, and they would far rather sell you chiffons and crepe de Chines. Fashion at Cowes is secondary to the uniform which moat women wear, whether they belong to the exclusive yachting circles or are merely visitors. Of course, one sees exceptions to this, but simple clothes show better tasto and judgment. _ Attempts have been made to revolutionise Cowes as regards dress, but in this case custom has been too strong even for the dress designers. Stockinette suits of navy blue rival navy blue serge and face cloth for popularity. The jumper of diagonal strips graduated in width and worn with a plaid belt is another prominent favourite. The spotted or coloured handkerchief which has been used all the season in some form or other is a specially useful accessory for the holiday outat, for one can -ring the changes by wearing many
