There are now indications that tho worst of Wellington's unemployment is past, for tho registrations of men in search of work have dropped from round about 500 to 350, though but for the wide provision which the City Council has beon able to make ont of loan moneys and citizens' contributions, both plus Government subsidy, tbe position would be anything but happy to-day. Yesterday, for instance, the number of mon on relief works was 664. The three latest works to be started were tho driving of a new length of main road at Wadostown, tho formation of tennis courts at Vogeltown, which is a comparatively small "district association" job, and the formation of a playground for Kaiwarra people. Each has made good progress, though no excavation and filling job quite comes up to that at Western Park; at any rate that is an opinion held by a numbor of membors of tho council. It is probable that within a day or two a further big lift will be given the Mayor's fund, sending it well above the £11,000 mark, in which case a good number moro men will bo provided with work. The Glenmoro street job is to be considerably speeded np in the course of the next week or two, for a second chute is being constructed to enable roughly double the quantity of spoil to be shot down to the gully. | With regard to the two levels of the Bongotai sandhalls area. about which soveral councillors had a deal to say following their visit of inspection, plans have now been amended to provido for a single level area on a grade of one in six hundred, so slight a rise that it will bo imperceptible to anyone with a wonderfully good eye, and some sort of surveying instrument, too, to help his eye out. Pending the working out of the now level, the men were transferred to the sandhill road, which has now been pushed well ahead towards Lyall Bay. A rather novel form of foundation 'is being given this length of road, manuka scrub being laid down to a depth of 9in to a foot, before the heavy rubble courso, also of about 9in, goes down, to be capped again by 6in of finer motal and blinding. The idea of tho scrub is to bind the sand till the rubble and rock settlo hard down.
