WATER CONNECTIONS

PERMITS NECESSARY

The new West Ward water works were the cause of some discussion at last night's meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council.

Councillor T. E. Jameson said that some water connections in the West Ward had been macTe without the authority of the council, some by unregistered plumbers, and some by people who were not plumbers. That sort of thing was apt to make the reticulation a second rate undertaking. He moved: "That an immediate inspection be made of water connections in tho West Ward, and in those cases where the connection has been made without the authority of the council, such premises bo disconnected unless the owner can show good cause why they should not." It was mentioned that this would not affect people who really had not known that a permit was necessary, and the motion was carried, the Mayor (Mr. P. Robertson) remarking that it was essential that a record such as the inspector would furnish, should be kept. / Councillor Jameson then moved a motion characterised by tbo Mayor as "rather drastic." It was: "That in future any person interfering with the water works of the borough without having obtained a written permit from the council, shall bo prosecuted, and that such permits be issued to registered plumbors only.?' - Councillor Duff: "It's ridiculous for a man to have to go along for a permit to put a washer on his tap, -whon perhaps his premises are boing flooded. A councillor: "You could cut it

Councillor Duff: "No, that's 'interfering with tho borough water works.' " (Laughter.) Councillor Spearman: "Notify iegisterod plumbors. They will protect their own business."

On boing put, tho motion was lost and ono by Councillor Spearman that plumbers be notified, and notices distributed in tho district, was carried.
