DEFENCE OF VERDUN
A MEMORIAL OSSUARY

PARIS, 18th. September. A hundred generals and two Cardinals participated in the inauguration at Houaumont of a great ossuary to commemorate the heroic defence of Verdun. The bodies of fifty unknown, soldiers were deposited therein, after which Marshal Petain lighted a perpetual flame of remembrance. In an oration he revealed that Verdun was aa inferno so frightful that each writtea order had to be repeated ten times to ensure that one in ten should get through. ;
