Lieutenant Gary, of thp United States' Intelligence Service, speaking at a Round Table discussion on the British Commonwealth of nations, said:"•< The most significant aspect'of the modern international era is the shifting of'tjie world politico.naval centre from the North Sea to the Pacific. Singapore is the key to the new British naval strategy on Britain's window overlooking the Pacific. This base is a faotor on which it is most likely Japan did not sonously count at tho Washington Conference."
Profossor Heaton, of Queon 's University, Canada, said Canada had shown little interest in naval defence because sho was comparatively safe from naval attack, but Australia and Now Zealand, because of thoir isolated position, felt their groat dopendenco on tho British Navy.
