PIG INDUSTRY
IN GREASED EXPORT. TRADE
The motion of l . Hon. E. Newman in the Legislative Council for the remission of the duty on maize ana other food products necessary "for the econo-mical-development of the pig products export industry was continued yesterday after "The Post" went to press. The Hon. W. Earnshaw said that the farmer wouM benefit by the abolition of the Customs duties, but the city dwellers would have to pay for the remission. New Zealand was a country exceptionally well fitted to grow maize profitably, whereas Denmark was not a maize-growing country, and therefore had to import maize. There was infinitely more protection already for the farmers than there was for the people in the towns and for the secondary industries. He trusted the Government would not remove the duty on maize, but rather encourage the growth of maize in the Dominion.
Mr. Newman moved an amendment to his motion to provide for the remission of the duty on all food products necessary for the operation and development of the business.
The amendment was not seconded,
The Leader of the Council (the Eight Hon. Sir Francis Bell) said the motion was premature. The Tariff Commission was about to report, and the question under dispute would be one of the matters within the Commission's order of leferenee.
The Hon. Sir Thomas Mackenzie objected to Mr. Earnshaw's statement that the farmer was on an all-round bet-; ter basis than the town dweller. "All the concessions to the farmer had been made with a view to developing the primary industries and indirectly benefiting the town dwellers. TJp to the present it had paid to raise pigs for the local market, but not for export, and he hoped the Commission would take into consideration whether maize could be grown profitably in the Dominion. He supported the motion.
The Hon. J. A. Hanan said that until land values were reduced it was not safe to go in for industries that were dependent upo,n tho land. Remissions of Customs duties would not lead to the results the mover sought to attain.
At this stage the debate was ad journed.
