SHIP AGROUND
HARBOUR BOARD'S POSITION

n -h CHRISTCHURCH, This JDav. On uth. July the steamer Tekoa went aground m Lyttelton Haibcmr for a short tune, when leaving for Dimedin. There was a wind blowing, and the ship, which was on an uneven keel, swung out of the channel aud grounded on the mud. At Dunedm she was examined by a diver, at a cost o£ £61 Bs. Yesterday the Lyttelton Harbour Board." considered a ~laim from the New Zealand Shipping Company for a refund of the cost of the diver's survey. It was stated that the board's solicitor had given an opinion that the board was liable.
Mr. W. K. M'Alpine pointed out that even when the pilot wag taking a ship ill or out of a harbour he was not in
charge The master was responsible for the safe navigation of a channel, whether the pilot was on board or not. That was recognised all over the world fo^» liembcr: "What on eaith is the Pilot
Mr M'Alpino said that he was there to help the master.
In reply to Mr."E. J. Howard, "MP it was stated that the harbour is not Bitting up The ship grounded outride the channel.
It was decided to accept no liability.
