AMATEUR ATHLETICS
WINTER EVENTS IN NORTH
This winter events have been staged regularly on. Saturday afternoons at the Domain, Auckland, and the number of entries received point to increased interest in amateur athletics in Auckland. Of late some promising talent has been seen in action. The remarkable consistency of A. J. Elliott has been a feature of these winter meetings. Last Saturday the 100 yards handicap provided the specttors with a thrilling finish. It is stated that Elliott's brilliant sprint over the last ten yards, when he dived in a sensational manner to snatch victory by inches, would have roused the enthusiasm of thousands. It was Elliott's eighth win in ten starts —a fine performance. The ■ Auckland champion started two seasons ago as a novice runner, and at the preesnt time he is running very well. Elliott's ambition is to win the New Zealand sprint championship, and it is considered that he should be in great form to meet M. Leadbctter, the present champion, at Christchurch, early in December.
The Otago Centre of the N.Z.A.A.A. has under consideration proposals for raising funds to finance a strong representative Otago team to go to Christchurch for tho New Zealand championships. It has been suggested that a combined gala and sports meeting be held in Dunedin on <i Saturday in October, with the programme continued until the evening, when the finale could be decided. Whippet racing, with the inclusion of a local runner off a good mark, has been mentioned as an event likely to attract a good deal of interest at such a meeting.
