CAUSES OF DISTRESS
SOCIAL WELFARE STATISTICS
The chairman of tho Social Welfare I Committee of the Wellington Hospital Board (Mr. G. Petherick), at a meeting of the board yesterday gave an outline of tho volume of business attended to by the committee for the five-week period, 31st May to sth July. The cases standing at 31st May numbered 209; new cases during the fiveweek period, 234; total assisted, 443; cases terminated during period, 234; cases remaining sth July, 291. The causes of distress were as follows:—Unemployment, 250; desertion and separation, 40; sickness, 103; widowhood, 20'; old age, 15; imprisonment, 4; miscellaneous, 11. The total number of cases granted outdoor relief during the month of June for tho last three years were: 1925, 121; 1926, 221; 1927, 443. At the meeting on Tuesday last the committee dealt with 214 cases of relief; 161 of those were unemployment cases, Ip 9of which applications were from single men. The cost of assisting single men amounted to just over £100 for the week. Every morning his shop was "next door to a fair" in appearance. Last week the committee had to provide 419 .beds.
