HUTT RIVER BOARD

The Hutt River Boaird met yesterday afternoon. Present: Measrs. W. T. Strand (chairman), J. C. Mabey, H. W. Smith, and C. Gostelow.

The engipeer (Mr. H. G. Sladdeii) stated that contractors were removing shingle from places other" than those prescribed by the board 1;, and were in many case 3 taking shingle; from places where the board was- carrying out reclamation works. On the motion, of. Mr, Strand it was decided to 'charge 6d per yard for shingle taken from sites allowed: by the board, and that measures be taken to prevent shingle being taken, from elsewhere.

It was decided to notify the Hutt Park Committee that that body would ia- future be exempt from rates. Mr. Smith stated that good progress was being made- with the work of clearing: the river bed, particularly of willows and of mud. "What ire want," said Mr. Smith,, "is to get tie feed clear and then the board can consider beautifying tlie stream."

Mr. Strand: "I think there will be opposition to removing the willows."

The engineer said' it would be an advantage to have the willows removed,, but it would need a good deal of maintenance: to keep the stream suitable.- for boating-. The contractor was doing very good work.
