COMPANIES AND LOCAL BODIES.

Considerable surprise on the part of commercial men was expressed when the purport of the Local Elections and Polls Amendment Bill, 1927, was understood. Tho Bill consists of eight lines, but, if the title be excluded, it is reducible to two, reading: "2. Section thirteen o£ the Local Elections and Polls Amendment Act, 1926, is hereby repealed." That is all. But if the Bill is passed, as business men see it, companies which last year for the first time had and exercised the right of voting as such at local body elections will lose that right. They are wondering and asking what for? However, the matter will probably be seriously considered by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce and other similar bodies.
