BIBLE-IN-SCHOOLS BILL
"HAS BEEN DESIGNEDLY
BLOCKED"
(By Telegraph.)
(Special to "The Evening Post.")
AUCKLAND, This Day. The Religious Exercises in Schools Bill has been designedly blocked by the opposition, said Archbishop Averill at the annual meeting of the Auckland Mothers' Union. "Nevertheless, I feel sure it will in time be passed owing to the large majority of members supporting it."
The Archbishop added that the Hon. L. M. Isitt, who had previously fathered the Bill, had been promised by Sir James Allen an opportunity to introduce it in the Legislative Council. It was most earnestly desir-ed that there should be public recognition of Almighty God in the public schools, and that the children should gain some knowledge of the Bible. At present clergymen throughout New Zealand in taking confirmation services found little religious training to build upon ■when instructing classes of young people. If the Bill were passed half the loaf would be gained, and the other half would need to be supplemented by the Church and the home.
In recognition of its services at a recent fire, the City Fire Brigade has received £5 from Messrs. Wardell Bros, and Co., as a donation to its recreation club.
