MENIN GATE MEMORIAL

YESTERDAY'S SERVICE

BRITAIN LISTENS-IN

(United Press Association.—Copyright.)

(Received 25th July, 10 a.m.)

LONDON, 24th July.

Every part of the British Isles heard this morning a surprisingly good broadcast of Lord Plumer's speech in unveiling the imposing memorial of the Menin Gate.

The King of the Belgians, in acknowledging Britain's aid, thoughtfully mentioned the long distances from which the Australians and New Zealanders came.

Sir Glanville Ryrie, the new Australian High Commissioner, was present. There was also a good representation of New Zealanders. Those who participated in the ceremony included Sir Worthingtoii Evans, Secretary of State for War, and the Auglican and Itoinau Catholic bishops. The ceremony closed with the sounding of the "Last Post," a Highland lament, and the reveille.

The Belgian and British National Anthems were sung and there was one minute's silence.
