• ■ <■' : (By Telegraph.) .-■./■,. • - (Special >ta rthe; "Evening- Pe*t.") ; ' £; „; 'V;: ; TIMAIIU, This Day. ■ The South'; Canterbury Hunt Club's Meet-ing-Vas- held at' Washdyke on Saturday. Eain'>fe]i' early in the morning, making the track a Irifie folding, but the weather •was ;fine during the day. There was a large attendance, and the .sport was excellent; -;' I."'',' " . HADLOW HURDLES. The racing, opened with the Hadloiv Hack Hurdles Handicap. The scratching of,-The Harp and Relic left-seven runners; Abert'eldy was a pronounced favourite, but Gdldtown and Guucase were also well biicxcd.. 'Goldtown led Clontarf and Gay yi.ict'ii'to the .first hurdle, where the firstnamed pair blundered slightly, though they held their places in front. Goldtown slipped into the second hurdle, but got over cleverly, while Aberfeldy also made .a faulty junip. Goldtown was showing the way to. Clontarf, Gay Queen, and Aberi'cldy at'this ;stage. Gay Queen hit hard at.the hurdle near the seven-furlong pust and- dropped back, Gunease, moving 'up with Clontarf and Aberfeldy, who were four lengths behind Goldtown at this stage.. Three, furlongs further on Goldtown and ClontarE were together in the lead, '-with Aberfeldy and Guucase two lengths away. Then Aberfeldy moved up, and; he was just. behind Goldtown when the straight waa-reached. Aberfeldy j'umpedHhelast hurdte-well clear of Goldtown, •with Guncase» not far" away. Aberfeldy looked an easy'winner, but Guncase put in. a. strong, run, and-Aberfeldy slackened upvnear. the post and .just got home by half"a head. Beauty t Light was three lengths^away, with Goldtown two lengths further back. - - . ; Over-confidence on the part of his rider nearly lost Aberfeldy the race. He would have been unlucky to lose. Goldtown did not'jump well on. the greasy ground. Gay Queen and: Clontarf shaped well for nov-ice's,-and'will do better. • ■ ■ ; : RAREORA HUNTERS' STEEPLES. ' ■Krasnorwas the only scratching for the Pafeora - Hunters' Steeplechase: Koyal iashion was a sound favourite, but The Babe, Hyperion, and Greenstone were all weir backed. 1 Royal Fashion and Hyperion • led • to the first fence, but Hyperion baulked and only scrambled over. Royal l'.asluori- then went on well clear of Greenstone, Good Form, Monko, and The Babe who, were in close order. With six furlongs gone Mataipuke also ioined in, and a. httle further on he took second place. Koyal .lashion was. still bowling along ireely. in the lead three furlongs :from home, with Mataipuke next, while Gi-cen-stone, and The Babe were not far away Alpnko and; Goodljform had retired. Royal fashion led <to .the straight, several lengths clear-xif the-other three, who were on terms. > The Babe then went after the . iayourite,,; and,, gradually wearing him dpwn, won by a neck. Mataipuke was four-lengths, away; with Greenstone five lengths further back. ,i.?? e j Babe improved considerably 011 the Waimate form, and the bigger"course probably suited him. ; Rbyal Fashion, who S?. m,c?,. from the same family as Fairy Herald and Fairy .Tidings, ran a sound race., Monkp failed to: stay. Tempter Van oftvearly and Hyperion fell, while Auburn lost'hia ..rider. "■• SOUTH CANTERBURY STEEPLES. _ The.Bcratching. of Cartoon, Ranui, Rad-iac,-jrightraid, ; and- Mettle Drift left six rutiners for-the.South Canterbury SteepicC j<i; Charlataa was always favourite, and he, wound up with .mm- j; ia n twice as muck support, as Vice Grand and Isla Bank, who disputed second fanoy. Isla Bank, and Frenchman took charge at the staft and past the stand, eight lengths m front of Charlatan, with the WT-fFv - ha?-' v- Along .the back Isla Bank;drew clear,, and at the end of six turlongs he was four lengths clear of SPS 1?!. Maungamoe, and Frenchman, white-Kip ing was last. They ran without cf ange.tiir starting on the'last round, tf%' jsl? B^.was six lengths in front Ol>Rar'ataP. and Maungamoe,'with FrenchKiphng, and Vice Grand not far away.. Five furlongs from home Charlatan started to close the gap, and he headed isla Bank a furlong further on when Vice Grand was. in third place. Charlatan was several lengths clear on reaching the straight, and he went on to beat Isla Bank.by ten lengths. Frenchman put in a good run. 111 the straight, but failed to catch -Vice Grand by a head, the pair being eight lengths behind the second horse .Maungamoe-and Kipling followed at Ion" intervals. - : ■ "

Thiswas Charlatan's first race since he met with a mishap at Hawera in May. Tt was an attractive performance, and with another race at the Christchureh Hunt Meeting next Saturday he will be in nice order for the more important engage-

merits. Frenchman ran a good race, which wiU'iinprove him.

LEVELS HACK HANDICAP.

Tie Levels Hack Handicap attracted' a field of six. Fairy Tidings; Kory O'More, and-.;Grey:' Finch were 'withdrawn. Cassolette and Shandre; were . the favourites. Cassolette jumped, out smartly with Laughie and Exide handy, but after going two furlongs Cassolette dropped back, Laughie going on from'Exide; with Shandre and Cassolette two lengths away. Shandre moved up at the- homo turn, and was alongside Laughie at the entrance to the straight, with Cassolette and Exide handy. Exide was' beaten-at this stage, while Laughie retired a little further on. Then Cassolette shot- to the front, while Captain Sarto'and Dubious were putting in strong claims. Cassolette looked an-easy -ivinner a 'hundred yards from the post, but she tired badly and only lasted Ion" enough to' beat Shandre by a neck, while Dubious, finishing in great style, was another neck away. Captain Sarto failed to sustain his .run, .and he finished three lengths further back. A lucky run on the rails was the deciding factor in Cassolette's favour. She is speedy, but on this form she lacks stamina. WASHDYKE TROT. The scratching of Roaming Boy, Iloaeh Dale, and First Admiral left a dozen starters for the Washdyke Trot. Tennis was a warm favourite. Meddler and Vasiliki failed to leave the mark, while Harry Locanda and Red Shiner went off slowly. Logan Princess began, smartly. At the end of two furlongs she had opened out o gap of six lengths from Bingen Wilkes, with Expedient, Tennis, Imshi, Harry Looanda, and Underscrub following at short intervals. ; Logan: Princess gradually increased her advantage, and she was a dozen lengths in , front : with half, the journey gone, Bingen Wilkes and Expedient being, next, with Tennis and Harry Locauda handy. .A little further on-Bingen Wilkes retired, Expedient, and Harry Locanda being left.to chase the' leaders. Harry Locanda itook .second place', on the turn. Logan Princess had. a good lead at the entrance to the straight, and she won pulling, up by four lengths from-Harry Lpcanda. A dozen lengths away, came Tennis, With. Expedient .and Dillon ,GoM together half.a dozen, lengths further back. The winner was ridden by D. Withers, who thus ensured his position at the head of tiie winning reinsmen for the season. TESCHEMAKER MEMORIAL. The 'Babe; Message Boy, and Good Form were withdrawn irom (.lie TeseheinaUer Memorial Hunt Cup Steeplechase, Icavin" seven useful hunters to make up the field .Night Raid- was a pronounced favourite, with Galway and Osterinan also well supported. Greenstone fell at the first fence, where Royal Wink was showing the way to Happy Mac and I'cter Marion. After S^ng half a;mile Peter Marion joined Koyal AVink in-tho lead, and they kept together.most of the way. ; Galway blundered at the- fence at the entrance to the straight at the end of'the round, and fell at the nest fence. Starting on the last round Peter Marion and Royal Wink were mx lengths in front of Happy Mac and/Osterman, with Night Raid several lengths, further back. The leading pair were still on terms half a mile from home when Osterman was in third place, with the others (strung out.' Than Peter Marion took charge and;he.'led to the straiirlit tour, lengths :in front of Osterman and ivoyal Wink, > who Were together. Poter Marion, was. still .in ■•front .at the last fenco when he. fell, .leaving Ostermau to beaf -Royal Wink easily by six- lengths. j\IKilt :*>aid was a hundred yards away, with. Happy Mac six .lengths further back. .. . ; '■■'..;■ ■ , winner, who-ia.half-brother to Fairy Herald and Fairy. Tidings, outstayed the pair who made "all the running.

; ■ HUJUERS' -PLATE. 'The gentletnen riders had -heir chance in'the Hiinters', Plate. The scratching of isasham, Royal . Fashion, Luthy, and Kras-npi-left ten' starters. Armchair finished up favourite With about a hundred tickets more than Miss Garance, Hyperion, and Arcos, who were evenly fancied. Diamond Jack took- charge*, at the start, leadiiv Miss Garance, Whifiler, and Jloyiil Dotpatch past the.stand. At tlie end of six iurlongs the order ivas the same, -while Muzzle, Arcos, and Hyperion hud also joined in. Diamond Jack was beaten half a. mile from home. Miss Granacc led Whilfler, Arcos, and Hyperion round the turn. The.four were in close order at the to 1 the' straight, where Arcos drew out and won easily by four lengths troni Hyperion, who beat Miss Garance by a similar margin. Six lengths further back came Armchair, who-was a long Wiiybnok Malt a-mile from-home. From this point ho put m a 'great run. The winner is owned by Mr. 11. Kiworthy, a.staunch supporter of huntiii" and her success was very popular. CLAREMONT HANDICAP. The meeting was brought to a close with the Clareinont .Handicap. Solferitc, Gold Mint, Dubious, Shandre. and Snatehcr were withdrawn, leaving a held of thirteen, including . Chick wheat, Thorndale, Soltoe, Mali Jong, and Arrowmir five . Winter Cup candidates. H was a great betting race. Fairy Herald carried a tew pounds more than Thor'ndale, while Carnot, Arrpwniir, Fairy Tidings, and Chickwheat were, all solidly supported Arrowrajr'Was the smartest out, followed by .Hurdy Gurdy,/Courtly Rose, Fairy Herald, ■; and ■Soltoe. This was' still the order along, the' back, where Coastguard and-Thorndale' Were last: Fairy Herald joined' Hurdy Gurdy in second place half 8 '.™';e from home,' where Arrowmir was stilr well clear, While Courtly Rose and Cnickwheat followed ,at intervals. Then I'airy .Herald .moved : up, and he headed Arrowmir.; On reaching the straight Carnot ran into third place, and a little fur-«ler-Pn' Fairy Tidings closed up. Fairy Herald ,had. the race .in hand a,t this sta™e and he won by two lengths, while Fairy Tidings- ; m>f "up in time to beat Carnot by a neck for second place. Arrowmir was two lengths away, with Courtly Rose heading the othcrp. ' The .rain which Ml early this morning just-suited . Fairy Herald and Fairy Tidings, the ■ pair being great gallopers in soft ground. Arrowmir, on the other hand would-.probably have done much better on a hard,-track. .Chickwheat slowed un lalf-way through, but Thorndale never looked dangerous.: • . : ''.
