THE LATE NIGHT

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—The latest move by Mr. Croskery to upset the 9 o'clock closing on Friday night and 12.30 on Saturdays is entirely opposite to the wishes of the vast majority of shop assistants in Wellington. He is not doing the assistants a good turn by any means, but rather is ft a backward step. To work the extra half-hour on the late night does not do us any harm, but on the other hand to get away a halfhour earlier on Saturday is a great boon. I happen to work in a store which employs sixty or seventy shop assistants, and I defy Mr. Croskery to get 5 per cent, of these assistants to favour 1 o'clock on Saturday. I doubt very much if he could get one out of the large staff to favour his attitude. Mr. Croskery has a position as secretary to the Shop Assistants' Union, but let him tell us how many assistants in Wellington are members. If our staff is any criterion, then it is a minority union. I assert that the vast majority of assistants prefer to work the extra halfhour on Friday night, and thereby gain an extra half-hour on Saturday morning. —I am, etc., ASSISTANT, BUT NOT UNIONIST.
