SHARKEY KNOCKED OUT
(Received 22nd July, 3 p.m.) NEW YORK, 21st July. Jack Dempsey knocked out Jack Sharkey in tho seventh round. The fighters enterod tho ring, facing a crowd estimated at 90,000, to decide which would meet Tunney on 15th September. Sharkey rushed his opponent, but Dempsey met him with short rights to the body. Both now fought at close quarters, with Dempsey driving to the body with both hands. Dempsey seemed to bo tho successful aggressor, punishing Ids opponent badly. Dempsey upper-cutted his opponent with his left. Sharkey was slow, but suddenly staggered Dempsey with a loft to the jaw, and proceeded to drive Dempsey about the ring with terrific lefts. Demysey was now bleeding, and now Sharkey looked the better man. DEMPSEY IN DISTRESS. j Dempsey appeared to be in serious distress at the boll. In tho second round Sharkey drove tho ex-champion to the ropes with lefts and rights to the body. Dempgey drove two rights to tho body, but they wero low, and Sharkey complained to. the referee. Sharkey "now crossed his right _to tho, jaw, following with ;in effective left to tho samo place, considerably slowing up tho ex-champion. Sharkey now peppered his opponent with rights, and Dempsey soemod slinky on his feet, but continued to drive punches with all his force. Sharkoy tried feebly to land blows to Dcmiisey's head. Sharkey was recovering and beginning to dance about his opponent. He staggered Dempsey with a left to the jaw. Dempsey then knocked Sliarkoy to one knee in the latter's coiner with a left to the pit of tho stomach. Dempsey kept on with lofts to the face until Sharkey was groggy. Dempsey hurt Sharkey with a hard left, and two lefts to the body. Dempsey upjicrcnt Sharkoy's jaw and the latter backed away. Both men were tired, but a final left hook to the jaw seemed to turn the tide against Sharkey. In round three Dompsey was more confident and Sharkey missed. Dempsey was aiming at the body and forcing the fighting, driving Sharkey. Ho was clearly in tho lead in this round. In tho fourth round Sharkey feinted a left and brought over a right to Dempsey's jaw, but tho ex-champion replied with rights to the body imd jaw, and then pounding his opponent to tho body. Ho followed up with lefts to tho face, forcing Sharkoy to a corner. Dompsey was bleeding badly from his right oye. They then exchanged snappy blows to tho head, coming to close quarters. Dempsey appeared to bo superior at in-fighting. Dompsoy shot a hard left to the jaw and Sharkey held on to Dempsey, who was fighting for all his worth at the bell. In round five Dempsey, against expectations, was out-boxing his younger contender, blocking his swings and causing him to miss. Tho ex-champion again went to, closo quarters, making Sharkey's body tho target. Sharkey was trying to take things easy, when ho suddenly staggered Dompsey with a cannon fihot, a right to tho oar, nnd followed it up with a bombardment to tho faco and head, but tho ex-cham-pion drove Sharkey to the ropes with a left to tho jaw. Sharkey smiled back. After that Dempsey seemed shaky, but continued to chase his num.
