STRONGER COUNTIES

NOTTS DOING WELL

MEET NEW Z3ALAXD

TO-MORROW

(By "Not Out") The Yorkshire-New Zealand match is to be concluded to-day. Unfortunately the tourists had struck a bad patch through the luck of the toss l'oing against them, and in their reply to lorkshire'a score of 377 they have been greatly hampered by very difficult batting conditions. The value of this test for the New Zealanders is, therefore, greatly reduced. It is to be hoped that better conditions will prevail for tho mateli with Notts, which commences at Nottingham to-morrow. Taking a lino through this season's performances in county cricket, Notts are possibly a stronger side than Yorkshire, at any rate they have a better record. The results to hand show that Yorkshiro have had six losses, whereas Notts have had only two defeats.

Since the well-known English critic. Colonel Philip Trevor, has made a comparison between Surrey and tho New Zealanders, the results of the York-shire-Surrey and- Notts-Surrey matches will no doubt be of interest. Yorkshire beat Surrey by ton wickets, and Notts beat Surrey by nino wickets. Yorkshire, however, have lost to Warwickshire, Sussex, and Middlesex, , whom Notts have beaten. On the other hand Notts have lost to Hampshire, whom Yorkshire defeated.

In last Beason's matches Notts were handicapped by a scries of unfortunate accidents to several members of the loam, as well as by the absence, through international and other claims, from a number of matches, of A. W. Carr and Larwood. It was fully expected that their record would be improved this season. Apart from having fine bowling talent at their command—Larwood, Flint, Barrett, Richmond, A. and B. Staples, and W. Voce (tho last-named a youth of 18, givc3 ovidenco of developing into a really first-class player; —Notts have excellent batting strength, with such playors of class as Can-, George Gunn, "Whysall, and Payton. Then in Shipston, Keeton, and G. Y. Gunn (a son of George Gunn) they have three sound young batsmen.

The team to meet the New Zealandera will come from the following:—A. W. Carr, R. 11. T. Turner, L. Kirk, G. •Gunn, Payton, A. Staples, S. J. Staples, Barrett, Whysall, Richmond (who has been given the Yorkshire match at Trent Bridgo for his benefit), Matthews, Lilley, Flint, Walker, Harris, Copley, Keeton, yocc, Hodgkinson, G. V. Gunn, Wheat, King, and Shipston.
