AUSTRALIAN OUTLOOK
SEVERE DEPRESSION
ORGANISATION NEEDED
{United Press Association.—Copyright) (Received 21st June, 11 a.m.) ' SYDNEY,. This Day. : The cli airman of the Metropolitan: Meat Industries Board (Mr. Cramsie) says that the position of the meat industry throughout the Commonwealth, is at present critical. Exporters had been carrying on at a loss for some time, and the immediate fftture gave no indication that the situation would improve. If anything the heavy yardings of sheep that would result from the unusually severe winter would tend to aggravate the depression. The depression was not confined to any one State or portion of the Com--monwealth, but applied to the industry as a whole. 'The small volume of busi^ ness that had come within the reach of the Queensland meatwofks for somo time had resulted in a large increase in operating costs, und the effect of the recent drought in that State would make the position worse, as the export trade would be light. A similar position existed in West Australia, white in Victoria and New South Wales difficulty was being-experienced in securing sufficient business to enable works to be operated profitably. "Only an organised attempt to handle tho trads scientifically and thereby stabilise it," he said, "will save the industry fro— disaster."
